Thesis Statement: Comprehension of design’s power to influence lives is no new subject to designers. It has a long history of the designers’s ability to affect society for perceived good, from William Morris, to the Modernists, to Tibor Kalman. Contemporary criticism questions this vein of design; the role of the designer ought to be the invisible conveyor of a client’s message leaving no room for conscience, has design striving for good actually achieved its goals or just created a fuss that further fueled commercialism? Time and again individuals and groups of designers have raised the call for design to put its power to collective good and as we leave the anything goes carefree post-modernist era responsibility may be the cry of design of the future.
